There are SO many parenthood moments that I swear were glazed over when it came to the usual topics with kids. One of them being brushing your toddler’s teeth. WHY DON’T MORE PEOPLE TALK ABOUT THIS!? Any tips would have been crucial but with Jackson’s diagnosis, everything seems to be juuuuuuust a little more difficult. So I’ve taken the liberty to list 5 tips on how we got Jackson [now 2 years old] to brush his teeth on his own!
Routines are Jackson’s bread & butter. Making it vital that we brushed his teeth every night became second nature & that’s the goal. He fought it in the beginning because it was new but that’s expected with anything new. He knows when I turn on the water, he puts his brush under. Then I put on the toothpaste then he brushes. When I turn the water on again, he put his brush under again, taps the toothbrush on the sink to get rid of extra water then puts it back in its holder. In general, routines are helpful with kids because they know what to expect next so make sure you follow through!
2. Let them try to do it themselves
Thankfully, Matt took this step by the reigns. I just wanted to hold the brush for J & if I had, I’d probably still be holding it & not giving J the opportunity to learn himself. Independence is a good thing but it had to be learned first hand, not taught. Just make sure you go back & double check once they’re ‘done.’
3. Have a teeth brushing song
Oh Motherhood. I know so many kids songs off the top of my head, it’s insane. Our personal favorite is this one. I’ll bring it up on my phone & for 2:14, we are brushing our teeth! J really enjoys these graphics & he knows IMMEDIATELY what we’re doing when he hears the song.
4. Brush together
This was probably the most important step with Jackson. He learns best through experiencing it himself & watching us do things. For us to brush our own teeth WITH him was a major breakthrough. He did start trying to brush our teeth with our toothbrushes then with his own. But once that was corrected, it became part of the routine!
5. FIND THE RIGHT Toothbrush
We currently have a standard kids toothbrush [one of those primary colored theme toothbrushes] for J but once I started using my CariPRO Electric toothbrush, he’s become nearly obsessed with it. So we may be looking into getting him his own electric toothbrush so he can love cleaning his teeth even more!
These tips make toothbrushing go much more smoothly around our house! It’s not a perfect system but it works most of the time, so we take it!
Speaking of brushing your teeth, I was fortunate enough to receive a CariPRO Electric Toothbrush early this month & have to say, I’m obsessed. I’ve been using an electric toothbrush already for the over the past year but the CariPRO is 100x better, in my opinion & let me tell you why!
It has 5 different settings to use: CLEAN, WHITE, MASSAGE, GUM CARE & SENSITIVE. I’m already used to the vibrations of an electric toothbrush but the gentle intensity [does that make sense?] is completely captivating. Like I held my old toothbrush with the CariPRO, both on, & could feel the difference. Not to mention it’s so quiet. Obviously, you can hear it when it’s turned on but it’s almost muffled.
Now it’s appearance is a whole nother thing. If you know me, you know I love all things grey & simple. Enter CariPRO: this thing is tall, grey & sleek. It’s matte & waterproof [for those that prefer to clean their teeth in the shower].
Shipping is free and there is a 60 day trial period. If you don’t love it, you can return it within 60 days for free but I don’t see you not loving it. With this electric toothbrush Smile Brilliant says that you’ll remove 7x more plaque than you do with a manual toothbrush, improving your gum health in less than two weeks! Using this electric toothbrush will make your teeth noticeably whiter in about a week when used daily. I feel like I should have taken before pictures of my teeth but I already feel more confident with my large smile! Can’t wait to get an electric toothbrush for J so we can continue to keep our teeth clean!
